My name is Josie Ruybal Abeyta. I have been sewing for a very long time. I learned how to sew on my mother’s old Singer treadle sewing machine. My mom sewed most of our clothes on her Singer and then she would pass the articles of clothing on to me to do the hemming by hand or sew the buttons or make the button holes. She taught me how to embroider beginning on dish towels and so I learned how to back stitch, French knot and cross stitch. Mom made nice, thick quilts that she tied with string or yarn and often used an old quilt or blanket as the batting. I learned how to make quilts from my mom.
Years later, as an adult, a dear friend named Lillian encouraged me to take up quilting. We took classes together, shopped for fabric together, and quilted using patterns. She taught me how to make my own binding and urged, pushed and prodded me into becoming a better quilter.
These two great women, my mom whose name was Lucinda and my friend Lillian were my teachers and mentors. They taught me and encouraged me and helped me to become the quilter that I am today. I have started this quilting business due to their influences and dedicate my work in their memory.
